Silver Lake
|
Hiking the Silver Lake trail is a great alpine hike. Starting at Silver Lake Flat reservoir, high in the Uinta National forest and ending, 1,300 vertical feet up, at Silver Lake in the Loan Peak wilderness area. Hiking this trail will take you through aspen groves, over clear streams, and into mountain top meadows. The Silver Lake trail is best hiked in early summer through early fall.
Access: Drive I-15 south to Alpine UT. Take the Timpanogos Cave exit. At exit turn east and continue on this road (I think it is state road 92) it will take you into Alpine Canyon. Keep going passed Timpanogos cave until the road forks. Take the left fork to Tibble Fork Reservoir. Once at Tibble Fork Reservoir take a paved road that goes north, this is the road to Silver Flat Lake. The road is not marked with any signs, but you will know that you are on the right road when it becomes grated dirt and starts climbing high into the mountains with many switch backs. Silver Flat Lake is at the top of the road. A small parking space, along with pit outhouses is provided. The trail head is north of the parking lot.
Hiking the Silver Lake trail will take you into the Loan Peak Wilderness Area. In addition to the normal wilderness area rules, a restriction has been placed on camp fires. Take along your stove if your going to stay overnight and practice a little wilderness conservation.
